Dear Neighbors,
The South Street Seaport is one of New York’s great districts. Its rich history, unique architecture and prime harbor location make the neighborhood unlike any other. But the character of this historic district, like other downtown neighborhoods, has evolved over the years. What began centuries ago as a thriving commercial port has become an increasingly residential area. With this change come new demands to improve the Seaport and serve a diverse local community comprised of residents, workers, business owners and visitors from New York and around the world.
As owner and operator of the South Street Seaport and Pier 17, General Growth Properties (GGP) understands these changing needs. That’s why our vision for the new Seaport focuses on serving the community and investing in the revitalization of Lower Manhattan. Our team includes preservation specialists, innovative local architects, community members and property managers who have worked at the Seaport for decades.
Our plan for the new Seaport will restore and preserve landmark architecture, expand open spaces, introduce more useful retail, open harbor views, and create new revenue, jobs, and housing. We are collaborating with the city, the community boards, elected officials, local businesses, and others to make sure the Seaport remains a welcoming destination with practical amenities and cultural attractions—serving as the “jewel in the crown” of the forthcoming East River Esplanade.
Most important among these plans, however, is ensuring that the one-of-a-kind Seaport character and charm remains intact.
We at GGP are proud to be a part of the Seaport legacy and its bright future.
